Ecuador - Life in Quito/1

Quito is a peculiar capital city. It is located at 2850mt above sea level, next to an active volcano called Pichincha (thanks God lately it has only had ash eruptions) and close to other volcanos, among which the famous Cotopaxi about 30km away from the city.

Quito è una città particolare, posizionata a 2850mt sul livello del mare, addossata a un vulcano attivo chiamato Pichincha (grazie al cielo ultimamente ha avuto solo eruzioni di cenere) e vicina a diversi vulcani tra cui il famoso Cotopaxi a circa 30 km dalla città.

People always gasp when they hear the altitude, but to be honest it all depends on the single person: as for me, I never feel more than a slight headache/tiredness the few hours after landing, and obviously uphill roads and climbing stairs leaves you out of breath way earlier than it would at sea level, but apart from that, Quito altitude is perfectly bearable.

The volcano issue...well...the whole of Ecuador Andean region is full of volcanos, so I guess they are used to them: you don't really think about it until the next eruption, they just look like mountains ;-) Little earthquakes are quite frequent and people get scared as much as we would back home.

La gente si spaventa sempre quando sente a che altitudine si trova la città, ma a dire il vero dipende tutto dal singolo: nel mio caso, non ho mai sentito più di un po' di mal di testa/stanchezza le prime ore dopo l'atterraggio, e ovviamente camminare in salita e fare le scale ti lascia senza fiato prima del solito, ma a parte questo, l'altitudine di Quito è perfettamente sopportabile. 

Per quanto riguarda il vulcano...beh...l'intera regione andina dell'Ecuador è disseminata di vulcani attivi e non, per cui penso che ci siano abituati: non ci pensi davvero fino alla prossima eruzione, sembrano semplici montagne ;-) Piccole scosse di terremoto sono frequenti e la gente si spaventa allo stesso modo con cui ci spaventeremmo noi.

Quito is located just 25km south of the equator, which would make you think it's incredibly hot here, but don't forget the altitude! The weather in Quito is like an eternal spring: average lowest temperatures at 10°C and highest at 19°C all year long. It is usually clear in the morning and cloudy/rainy in the afternoon. February-March-April are the rainiest months, while June-July-August are the sunniest months. Due to the altitude and location, the sun here is very strong, it hits your head like a brick and it is not uncommon to see people protecting themselves from it with an umbrella. Sunscreens here start at SPF 50 up to 100 and more!

Quito si trova a circa 25km dall'equatore; questo vi può far pensare che faccia incredibilmente caldo qui, ma non dimenticatevi l'altitudine! Il clima a Quito è come un'eterna primavera: temperature minime sui 10°C e massime sui 19°C tutto l'anno. Di solito il cielo è sereno di mattina e nuvoloso o con pioggia il pomeriggio. Febbraio, Marzo e Aprile sono i mesi più piovosi mentre Giugno, Luglio e Agosto sono i mesi più soleggiati. A causa dell'altitudine e della posizione, il sole qui è molto forte, ti colpisce alla testa come un mattone ed è comune vedere la gente che si protegge con l'ombrello. Le creme solari qui cominciano dal fattore 50 fino a 100 e oltre!
