Every Monday morning there is the traditional change of guards at the palace of government in Quito. The president Rafael Correa and all his ministers and party members watch it from a balcony at the main square (Plaza Grande), while a vast group of people gathers under the balcony to watch the show and express their support to the president.

Ogni lunedì mattina a Quito c'è il tradizionale cambio della guardia al palazzo del governo. Il presidente Rafael Correa e tutti i suoi ministri e membri del partito osservano la funzione da un balcone sulla piazza principale (Plaza Grande), mentre un vasto gruppo di persone si riunisce sotto al balcone per guardare lo spettacolo ed esprimere la loro solidarietà al presidente.
I attended the event for the first time this morning and it was indeed interesting: not much for the changing the guards show (which anyway I wasn't well positioned to watch) but to observe what latin american "populismo" (populism) and "socialismo" (socialism) really mean.
This left-wing president is particularly loved by lower classes, which are very passionate showing support with their flags, their chanting, their faith in him and in the concept of "patria" (homeland) and "pueblo unido" (united people).
Of course I find them a bit funny, they are like "groupies" and actor fans and simple campaigns that promise them a "revolucion ciudadana" (people's revolution) really make them proud and excited (and of course all presidents know how to use that in their favour, Correa included). But you must think of where they come from, most of those people are really poor, not only money-wise but also culturally, and they need a "hero" to give them hope.

Oggi per la prima volta ci sono andata anche io ed è stato decisamente interessante: non tanto per il cambio della guardia (che oltretutto non ho visto bene da dove mi trovavo) ma per osservare e capire cosa significano davvero il "populismo" e socialismo latino-americani.
Questo presidente di sinistra è particolarmente amato dalle classi sociali più basse, che molto appassionatamente dimostrano il loro pensiero con bandiere, canti, con la fede in lui e nel concetto di patria e di "pueblo unido" (popolo unito).
Ovviamente li trovo un po' buffi, sono come i fan di cantanti o attori famosi, e semplici campagne politiche che gli promettono una "revolucion ciudadana" (rivoluzione del popolo) li rende orgogliosi ed eccitati. (e come no, tutti i presidenti sanno come usare questo a loro favore, Correa compreso). Ma dovete pensare da dove viene questa gente, la maggior parte di loro è veramente povera, non solo economicamente ma anche culturalmente, e cercano disperatamente un eroe che gli infonda speranza.

In my opinion, it's not important what he says but what he does for Ecuador, and I have a feeling that he is doing definitely more for the lower classes than anyone before, even though I also understand and respect the views of those who don't like him.
Of course this is only my humble foreigner opinion, but it's true that rich and middle class in Ecuador are a minority: I believe that if you want to change a country, you must start by giving the basics to everyone, from health care to quality transportation to education to equal opportunities. Rich people can get all this privately and at top levels, but poor people don't; and believe me, nobody would just choose to attend a public school or be cured in a public hospital here! Therefore, I believe that a few years with a president who cares about the public sector and lower classes so much is a plus point for a country like Ecuador, before they can ever think of progressing as a modern country.

Personalmente, penso che Correa sia un po' troppo arrogante ed egocentrico e uia davvero molto il populismo, ma allo stesso tempo sembra che davvero ci creda in quello che fa, e soprattutto che porti a termine i progetti. Alcuni dei suoi ideali e amici potranno anche essere questionabili,ma in generale sembra una persona onesta, aperta e moderna e con un buon background di studi.
Secondo me non è così importante quello che dice, quanto quello che fa per l'Ecuador, e ho la sensazione che stia facendo decisamente di più per le classi popolari che i presidenti che lo hanno preceduto. Allo stesso tempo, rispetto e in parte capisco le opinioni di chi non lo appoggia.
Ovviamente questa è solo la mia umile opinione da straniera, ma è vero che la classe media e la classe ricca in Ecuador sono una minoranza: credo che per cambiare un paese si debba cominciare fornendo i servizi basici a tutti, dalla sanità ai trasporti di qualità, dall'istruzione alle pari opportunità. I ricchi possono accedere a tutte questi servizi privatamente e ad ottimi livelli, ma non i poveri; e qui in Ecuador, credetemi, nessuno andrebbe in una scuola o un ospedale pubblico per scelta! Per questo, penso che un po' di anni con un presidente a cui importa del settore pubblico e delle classi povere così tanto siano un punto a favore per l'Ecuador, prima che possa anche solo pensare di progredire come un paese moderno.
